Week 7 - Australia, July 26 - 30
RAZ Summer Art Campers got their RAZ passports stamped at each island they visited and filled their travel art journal with fun facts. They experienced cultural art as they assembled 3D coral reefs, created unique animal road signs, sculpted Australian animals, made Fijian jewelry, crafted bamboo pan flutes, built aboriginal wooden huts.
Amazing Australia
Some of the most beautiful oceanscapes are around Australia and the islands. As they learned about the geography children built a 3D Coral reef using mixed media on foam board, watercolor wash, real coral, and shells
Dr. Ridgeway described the "Aborigines, Australia's 'indigenous' First Peoples as:
“We are one, we are different to each other, and we are many.”
Campers made Aboriginal Dot Paintings by dobbing Tribal Designs with Q-tips on a black artboard and found these peoples were great living examples of "Unity Through Diversity."
Kids sculpted exotic fish and Australian animals with clay and made Animal Road Signs protecting their favorite critters.

Melbourne was briefly called Batmania. You can still visit Batman Park.
Why don't people pet Platypuses? The males are poisonous. with claws in their back feet holding enough venom to kill a dog or make a person seriously ill.

RAZ Art Campers designed island-style jewelry and charms with materials such as leather, "teeth" or "claws," beads, and natural seeds.

Fijian have many superstitions. For example, coconuts have eyes and watch for certain people to bomb. And if you get bombed by a coconut it's bad luck.

Some Solomon Islands Fun Facts:
The most active underwater volcano, Kavachi, blows huge eruptions out of the ocean near the Solomon Islands.
There is no such thing as breakfast, lunch, or dinner - people simply eat when hungry.
Boys are viewed as an adult if they can build a house, regardless of his age.
Kids built island huts on stilts with wood, natural materials like thatch, and formed household objects.
New Zealand
RAZ Art Campers created multimedia landscape pieces using watercolor and collage techniques.
Some New Zealand Fun Facts:
There is a Hobbiton, New Zealand, the only place in the world with permission to use hobbit money from the movie "Lord of the Rings."
They have the longest-named town in the world! "Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu."
They have different kinds of Kiwis: It's a fuzzy fruit, it's a bird, it's a national symbol. and a "dry kiwi" is someone born in New Zealand,
Each week children had chances to earn RAZ coins as they learned RAZ studio rules of good conduct and played games challenging how well they could work together. The coins were cashed in on Friday for real prizes at the RAZ 'tourist' shop.

This educational and cultural art experience is part of the summer RAZ curriculum has immersed children in discovering and "traveling" the world over 10 weeks. They have learned geography, history, and social studies as 7 continents were explored.
